Hot Nerd In Preppy
June 07, 2026
What’s Hot About a Hot Nerd?
There's been a look I keep seeing. Preppy, but not the boarding-school kind, something looser and less concerned with getting it right. It clicked when I saw Josh O'Connor wearing a Dior tie with a blue cap and a blazer, mid-conversation, completely at ease.
A cap and a tie shouldn't coexist that well, but on him it looked like the most obvious pairing in the world. He clearly wasn't thinking about it, and that nonchalance is exactly what made the whole thing magnetic.

O'Connor is about as close to the textbook "nerd" archetype as it gets, but the operative word isn't nerd. It's hot nerd. Search the term and you'll get something flat like "someone who's intellectual and physically attractive," which doesn't come close to explaining why these people are so hard to look away from. I kept circling the question when something Jameela Jamil once said resurfaced. The Good Place actress put it simply: "Real masculinity isn't about dominance. It comes from stability and self-assurance."

That's what makes Josh so compelling. He knows who he is, and he can win you over with his words, his gaze, and a gentle charisma most people couldn't fake if they tried. The preppy look works on people like him because the clothes aren't building the character. The character was already there. The clothes are just where it shows through.
The Relaxed Preppy Boys of SS26
Preppy's return for SS26 isn't a nostalgia play. Old-school preppy meant "proper" and "polished," but the current version deliberately sidesteps the formula. Think preppy with the tension released. I'm not trying to look put-together, but don't mistake that for not having taste. Right now, casual balance reads as more sophisticated than precision ever could.

On the SS26 runways, the immaculately pressed honor student is gone. In his place: preppy boys with something slightly undone about them, though the undoing feels entirely calculated. Eckhaus Latta is the prime example, buttons left unfastened, every look carrying a loose, lived-in ease. It reads as dressed up, but the point is it never looks like it cost you anything.

Your Failproof Guide to Effortless Preppy
If preppy feels intimidating, approach it as a formula. The goal isn't a flawless outfit. It's knowing where to release the pressure.
Today's Hot Nerd Knows How to Layer
Your layering game makes or breaks a relaxed preppy look. The shirt is the anchor. Rather than buttoning up Hermès-style, leave one or two undone, or let a collar peek out from underneath. Those small concessions do more for the mood than any statement piece.

Layer a shirt under a knit or sweatshirt for a clean base, then take a cue from MIU MIU: work a tonal palette of browns, yellows, ivories, and greys to build depth. A bright inner layer in white or beige for contrast is another easy win.

The color formula right now: navy, grey, and ivory as your foundation, then fold in a spoonful of powder blue, pale yellow, or soft green. One touch of color is all it takes.

Lean Into Accessories

PRADA nailed the quintessential hot-nerd accessory with perfectly styled glasses. If the same black frames everywhere are starting to bore you (they should be), try a softer shade like beige to shift the whole energy.

I'll say it: the tie has grown on me. And apparently the rest of the industry agrees, because SS26 was full of collections rethinking how neckties can be worn.

Dior Men under Jonathan Anderson was maybe the clearest expression of relaxed preppy this season. Baby blue, mint, pink. Ties left loose or worn at uneven lengths. Shirts with the kind of natural drape that comes from skipping the iron. Nothing forced, nothing overthought. It all just moved well.

The rule right now is simple: the looser the tie, the better. JUNYA WATANABE took it furthest by layering three ties in different patterns over a single white shirt. It could have been too much. Instead it just felt like a good joke, told well.

The other accessory worth paying attention to: socks. They work with everything from high-tops to sandals and add a point of visual interest without asking much of you. There's room to be bold here.
Martine Rose paired a pinstripe jacket with rough-cut denim shorts and sport socks pulled above the knee. The sporty layer over classic preppy codes opens the whole look up. MASU went even further: knee socks, boots, short trousers, all of it pushing preppy into more personal territory.

The Most Classic Combo: Shirt + Loose-Fit Trousers
Shirt and wide-leg trousers. Maybe the most familiar preppy pairing, but it changes completely the moment you loosen the tie or stop worrying about creases. The slight imperfection is what makes it actually appealing. AMI took it lighter with cropped trousers, long socks, and loafers.

In a relaxed preppy moment, fit matters more than anything. Too slim and the whole thing dates itself. MASU and KOLOR show us that roomier silhouettes carry just as much of that quiet, intellectual preppy energy.

What someone wears tends to say more about them than what they actually tell you. I have a habit of reading people through their clothes, and what makes hot-nerd preppy stay with me isn't that it's a trend. It suggests something about someone's taste and disposition without spelling it out, and that leaves room for the imagination to fill in the rest. The new preppy look is about not about what you wear, but how you wear it.
How far you roll your sleeves, whether the collar goes up or stays flat, whether the tie is snug or hanging. These small choices set the tone of a look and, past that, the impression of the person wearing it. SS26's version of preppy isn't really a style. It's more of a disposition. And the thing that matters most, before any of the clothes, is knowing who you are. Everything follows from there.
